Ranjani is one of the leading Hindustani Classical vocalists of the younger generation from India.  Endowed with a rich vibrant voice and coupled with immense dedication to her chosen vocation, Ranjani has earned wide acclaim for her performances which are known for their powerful exposition and highly melodic appeal. Trained in the Gwalior and Jaipur gharana gayaki-s, Ranjani is also known for her soulful renditions of devotional bhajans.

She was initiated into Hindustani music at a young age by her mother, Vijaya. Her formal training began under the tutelage of Pt. Kashinath Shankar Bodas from Kanpur, and was later continued under Smt. Veena Sahasrabuddhe in Pune. In 2001 she was selected as a resident scholar at the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) in Kolkata, with Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar as her guru. While at SRA, Ranjani also received guidance from Vidushi Girija Devi, acquiring a rich repertoire of Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti and Kajri.

In addition to traditional bandishes, Ranjani has a vast repository of beautiful and intricate compositions including tarana and Ragamala set to tune by contemporary composers like Pt. Balwantrai Bhatt, Pt. Vasant Thakar, Pt. Ramashreya Jha and Pt. Dinkar Kaikini. Devotional Bhajans of Meera, Surdas, Kabir (Nirguni Bhajans) and Tulsidas are also an integral part of her concert repertoire.

AWARDS, ACCOLADES AND CD PUBLICATIONS

 Ranjani has won many awards and fellowships, prominent among them being the, Central Government Scholarship for Hindustani Classical Music, Govt. of India (1998-2000), the resident scholarship of the ITC-Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata (2001-2006), Ramkrishnabua Vaze Yuva Gayak Puraskar (2013), Charles Wallace Grant (UK) 2015 and  the Surmani award from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. She is empanelled as a performing artiste for ICCR. (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) and is a graded artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan. Many of her audio CDs (Sonic Octaves Pvt Ltd, Mumbai; Bihaan Music, Kolkata; RagaNxt.) have been published and are critically acclaimed.

RESEARCH IN MUSIC

Ranjani has had a stellar academic career as well in music. Recipient of the UGC-NET Junior and Senior Research fellowship in 2006, Ranjani is a doctorate in Music. Her research work focuses on studying the stylistic diversity within the Gwalior Gharana through analysis of recordings of a few Gwalior Gharana vocalists from the 20th Century. She is currently engaged in academic practices at the university level working as a faculty in the Department of Hindustani Classical Music at Sangit Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University (founded by Rabindranath Tagore) Santiniketan in West Bengal. Earlier after having graduated with B.Sc Physics, Ranjani obtained a Masters degree in music from Lalit Kala Kendra, University of Pune, and securing first rank. She was also associated with Lalit Kala Kendra, University of Pune, as a guru and visiting lecturer. As a Charles Wallace Scholar, she collaborated with ethnomusicologists at Durham University, UK on a project entitled “ advanced techniques of analysis in Khayal performance”.

Ranjani gives online music teaching lessons to aspiring students and has conducted music workshops under the auspices of many institutions and groups such as SPIC MACAY, Isha Yoga Center (Coimbatore), Sri Sathya Sai Baba Mirpuri College of music and many more.
